Motherly & Otherly
I’m a female artist & mother asserting, alerting & articulating with my feminine perspective. Acting upon the man-made & systemic with process-led material interventions. As protestestation or response to embedded narratives.
Using matter to expose matter. Fragmentary, evidential, consolidated in form, narrative bodies are fleshed out in - clay, glass, film, photography, graphics & installation.
Identifying, evaluating, accounting for the instinctive mother, there is a dislocation, fragmentation of that agency through systems that work against us, this allows our a sense of other to come into play. Rather than cooperation its capitulation. There are disguised motives and meanings. My work evidences a colonised, corrupted & coopted body. This could be a fight against that force? My approach works with the body, object, subject, lost & found, in a meta-process. Acting upon materials to alter, warp or degrade them, with form, the body, that holds it all, contains it. All the stories, scars, experiences, some caged, bound, pierced, broken and subverted.
My method alludes to archaeological practice, some stereo-typifycations of identity - such as woman, the storyteller, seer, temptress, instigator & ‘troublemaker’. By embedding artefacts and playing on themes, I’m asking ‘what do I know’? What variables validate one narrative & dismiss an other?
I gather from my surroundings, as a child wandering, locating, sensing. Forming through journey, process, bodies of work that hold gathered, storied elements. Making links to my surroundings, circumstances & innate matriarchal, feminine agency with the man-made. My use of traditional techniques are subverted, sewn, wrapped, warped, fixed, offered-up. They’re a bit like ‘making trouble’ - with material & matter and a form of dialogue through it. I seek to push & pull, drawing in past, assumed pasts, layers, possibilities, limitations & ‘imagined futures’. I work to satisfy ideas, to reach out, to embrace & sense in the detail - as there’s always more revealed than we can truly reckon with. There lies ‘troubled’ elements, otherness, that alludes to recurring, altered narrative. Otherness, controlled via assumed powers, a disassociation from which is through piecing together in the storied world. Otherness can appear as the trouble, faults, cracks, marks, link’s made as a building narrative around themes of abuse, entrapment & recovery. By engaging in the making, connecting I find presence there - energy, meaning, reclaiming & reinvesting with the trouble - to create consolidated forms, or bodies, which hold that trouble & stay with it.
When I make, I sense the trouble. Making as a subversive potent tool for change, alteration, transformation. Making as connecting, ancestral, contemporary & abstracted, it provides a way in & develops a meaningful dialogue on many levels. Artists & Intellectuals I learn from, find a way to intersect creatively, expansively & radically, challenging the context & meaning of what remains, what is fact, what is believed, what is remembered or enacted - Haraway, Beard, Maslow, Bourgeois, Emin, Belmer, Dali, Horn, Warhol, Deller, Parker, Brownsword, Perry, Bowie, AFX, Bjork, Eno - all offer ways to approach & to process alternatively, challenging what is. For me, it is that, creativity is a tool, to bring forth a reckoning, a summing up - accounting, deliberating, deconstructing, destroying, rebuilding, remaking, resolving, bearing and unifying with the trouble, in the making. An expression of otherness is always at play, often against the systems at work, challenging them to ally differently, to expand, to encompass, to blow things up to a broader view. Whilst I am at play against constraints, tensions, limits, the possibilities or discoveries push for change, for seeking an altered state. A fresh perspective. My current view focuses on loss and a sense of corrupted powers. I am a childless mother. My child was ‘removed‘ from me. I feel rage, injustice, more other than mother. My role & rights were removed from me, as were my child‘s. This gave way to so much more than trouble, it rerouted truth, trust, history. It isolated, disconnected, silenced, traumatised & condemned. When asking for protection we recieved blame. My work now aims to reclaim that narrative, removal & loss, to form a voice, a place, a space to begin positing an alternative view & release & realise tensions. I work in a meta context, speaking of otherness, relating to other means, Fragments, histories, stories, lores, reclaimed, embedded in narrative bodies of mother, maker & other.
Making, forming, sensing, stirring, storing, holding, pulling, pushing, tearing, birthing. I bring otherness & motherness, to what I create. My craft forms narrative tensions. which I begin to shape, form & diversify with dynamic interplay. A retrieval, location & emergence of self brings a responsive, ready exchange, in making, linking, placing in spatial, sensual & social aspects. Drawing on automatic, immediate, cyclical, repetetive, systemic & emotional attachments, I’m investing process as a means of escape, mediation, discovery, destruction, delight, all, in the making. From the disparate & fragmented I seek togetherness. Some form of release, recovery, restraint, embrace & connection to the transcendent & transformative. I like to play, prise, poke pressure & act upon materials. Meta-physically probing what is, was & could be present. Chaos, darkness, some turbulent, disturbing dislocations run with sublime realisations, wonder, & a kind of magic. Being responsive and responsible to it, helps shape it, guide it, hold it, stay with it, locate it & reclain it.

Completed for my first year Contemporary Crafts BA at Falmouth University. These are the outcome of a ceramic vessel casting brief. These vessels explore commodification & detachment of child-rearing & feeding ones young. How removed, & mechanised the intimate nature of bonding with our babies in a postmodern society, has become. In the wider context, from the feminine perspective, these objects probe how patriarchal, post industrialised constructs alienate us from our children & the act of breastfeeding - where trust, love, sense of safety, key nutrients, ideas, values, intimacy, are first exchanged.
